DUOLINGO

When learning language, the main thing is to turn the lessons into lifestyle, constantly make discoveries and practice. I found some useful resourses which i use myself. I want to talk about one of the list.

You probably have heard something about Duolingo

Duolingo is the world’s most famous language learning application. The lessons take place in a playful form, so exercise in the app is fun and interesting. The level of difficulty increases gradually: at first you will learn individual words, but at the end of the course - to parse whole sentences.

Users of the application compete among themselves, earning experience points. For many users, the transition to a new league and achievement becomes a real boost to work.

There are also some advantages and disadvantages in Duolingo.

Advantages:

1. Learning from scratch. In Duolingo, the training program is already written for you, so the application is good for learning the language from scratch when you do not know what to do. But if you have already taught something, then you do not have to return to the beginning. Before using the application, you will be offered to pass a test for language level.

2. Learning vocabulary and basic grammar. There are several types of tasks in the application: word selection, typing, word or phrase translation, sentence compilation and others. They help to secure words in memory.

3. Daily activities. The app will send you regular alerts so you will remember to work out.

4. Not only English. Duolingo has German, French and Spanish as well as English for Russian speaking users. But if you already speak English, you can learn more than 30 languages. Even fictional Klingon and Valyrian.

Disdvantages:

1. There is little listening. Duolingo can listen to the pronunciation of words, and even have listening assignments when you need to write down what the speaker said. But such tasks are not enough. To develop the skill you need to listen to full-fledged dialogues and texts.

2. Doesn’t take speech well. Duolingo has pronunciation tasks, but learning to speak correctly is unlikely to work - the application is not receptive to speech. Pronunciation is better with a real person.

3. Only supplement to the main classes. Learn the language only by application will not work. In order for words learned not to turn into dead weight, they need to be understood in context and used in real speech situations. And in Duolingo this is just not. To learn the language, you need to immerse yourself in the language environment as much as possible - read, watch movies, communicate.
